What happens when one’s intellect and impulses are unwanted? That’s a question I currently feel unable to answer. Maybe if we take a look at the opposite first. If a special person’s talents are appreciated and included in lessons etc., people could benefit from it. Knowledge is one of the, if not the most important resource in this world. But it is useless if one keeps it to themselves. To put it to use, they have two options.
One, they could sell it. Selling knowledge as information or expertise is common business in typical trade agreements. One loses money, the other time or the priviledge of exclusive information. Both of them gain, but from a perspective looking at both, they gained nothing but just exchanged.
Two, they could share it. Sharing can be directly lecturing and educating people or using it oneself, which means refining ones knowledge to technologies or policies and then to share those with a community. While this means no direct benefit to the individual who shares, on a global scale this is to a large extend responsible for any technological, cultural and social progress made in the past few thousand years.
But now this has come to a halt. A huge demand and promise of high profits make gathering information and expertise so valuable that it would be economic suicide not to sell it. Okay fine, the intellectual wealth is hardly growing anymore, so what? But like turbine engines on a plane, this growth is required to maintain the status quo. If you stop fuelling the turbines, the plane might be able to sail for a while, but will eventually lose more and more height. So what we are observing now is a potential peak of intelligent life on this planet. We’re as high as we’ve never been before! But that also means that from now on, it may just go downwards. And once the plane starts dropping down like a stone there’s hardly a way of stopping it from crashing. I will pay close attention to the developments in the future.
But the current perspective is a grim decline of economy and society alike.
